Hamilton man arrested, charged with murder in death of West Windsor resident Elaine Murray

A 24-year-old Hamilton resident has been charged with one count of first-degree murder, one count of first-degree felony murder, one count of second-degree burglary, and one count of fourth-degree tampering with evidence in the death of West Windsor resident Elaine Murray.

Denzel Whitmore was taken into custody without incident Thursday afternoon in Hamilton Township.  The Mercer County Prosecutor’s office plans to file a motion to detain him pending trial.

On Wednesday evening, Aug. 2, just after 8 p.m., police in West Windsor responded to a residence on Galston Drive after neighbors went to conduct a well-being check on Murray, who was 71 and lived alone. The neighbors noticed evidence of a break-in at her home.  Officers arrived at the scene, entered the home, and found Murray’s body in a bedroom on the second floor of the home. She had visible signs of injuries to her face and she was bleeding from the back of her head, police said.

Law enforcement officials did not say how they were able to connect Whitmore to the murder. But they thanked the New Jersey State Police, the Hamilton Police, and the Harford County Sheriff’s Office in Maryland for their help with the investigation.

The investigation is ongoing.  Anyone with information is asked to contact Mercer County Homicide Task Force Detective Jacob Schor at (609) 989-6406 or West Windsor Police Sgt. Roberto Reyes at (609) 256-0997.  Information can also be emailed to mchtftips@mercercounty.org.
