Washington Road bridge over D&R Canal reopened

At about 1 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 30, the Washington Road Bridge over the D&R Canal in Princeton and West Windsor was reopened to vehicles.

The bridge is restricted to vehicles weighing less than 10 tons and the speed limit is 25 miles per hour. 

Pedestrian access across the bridge remains closed. Work underneath the bridge will continue through the end of the year.

Just last Friday, the New Jersey Department of Transportation announced that the bridge would remain closed this week. It’s unclear what changed to enable to bridge to reopen Monday.


The D&R Canal towpath was closed at Washington Road at 7 a.m. Monday, Oc. 30, and will remain closed until 11:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 3. Officials said the closure is necessary for utility work under and adjacent to the bridge.

Pedestrians and cyclists on the towpath coming from either direction will have to turn around at Washington Road. In addition, pedestrians and cyclists on Washington Road will not be able to access the D&R Canal towpath heading north toward Harrison Street. Access from Washington Road southbound onto the towpath toward Alexander Street and from the towpath coming from Alexander Street onto Washington Street northbound towards Princeton will be open.

  1. Note “the bridge is restricted to vehicles weighing less than 10 tons.” Good luck enforcing that. Just the cab unit alone of a typical tractor-trailer weighs a lot more than that.
