Summer construction projects will continue around Princeton for the week of Aug. 14. Much of the construction is related to private development or public utility improvements, according to the Princeton Engineering and Infrastructure Operations Department.

Municipal projects that are under construction include the annual road resurfacing program and the Witherspoon Street Improvements Project. The resurfacing program will be starting up again on Aug. 21 with the construction of sidewalk curb ramps on Hutchinson Drive and Farrand Road.

The Witherspoon Street Improvements are ongoing with storm sewer and sidewalk construction. Traffic will alternate in one lane through the construction area between Leigh Avenue and Green Street.

Spring Street Garage

Concrete demolition work will begin the week of Aug. 14 at the municipal Spring Street Parking Garage. Up to 100 spaces will be unavailable for parking on the upper levels of the garage.

Gas System Modernization Project

Waters & Bugbee, PSE&G’s contractor, is replacing gas mains on Moore Street and Walnut Lane. The work is expected to be done by Friday, Aug. 18. The contractor will also be working on Boudinot Street and Morven Place during the week. Drivers need to be aware that some roads will be closed and detours will be in place.

Terhune Road and North Harrison Road Closures

The North Harrison Street southbound lanes near Terhune Road will be closed early in the week for underground utility work, and traffic will be detoured to Ewing Street. Terhune Road will be reduced to one lane of alternating traffic, as well, with complete closures when utility trenches across the road are being dug. Please abide by the detour signs.

Graduate Hotel

Structural work has been completed at the Graduate Hotel and the large crane has been removed from the construction site. The sidewalk on Nassau Street is nearly complete and most of the sidewalk has been opened. The last work area at the corner of Chambers Street and Nassau Street will be under construction next week. Chambers Street will be subject to periodic closures for the delivery of materials and for PSE&G to install transformers in underground vaults for the hotel. Some closures may be for full days. Bank Street may be closed at times while the parking lot behind 12 Nassau Street is repaired and resurfaced.

University Place and Dickinson Street Tree Work

On Wednesday Aug. 16, University Place and Dickinson Street will be closed to through traffic between 9 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. to remove trees that have become hazardous. Princeton University, the Princeton Public Works Department, and PSE&G will be working collectively during this closure to remove five large trees. Police Officers will be directing traffic at the intersections of Nassau and University, Dickinson and University, and Mercer and Alexander. Parking along University Place and Dickinson Street will be prohibited during this time and the parking spaces will be blocked off on Tuesday night. Princeton University will be replanting trees along the corridor at a later date.

Assistant Municipal Engineer Jim Purcell said it is challenging to coordinate all of the construction projects in town because things change day-to-day depending on the weather or the availability of materials and personnel. Sometimes construction crews will also show up without notifying town officials, Purcell said.
