History

The Princeton University is the successor of the College of New Jersey originally founded by New Light Presbyterians in 1746 to train ministers. The college was moved to Princeton, New Jersey in 1756. Under the leadership of John Witherspoon who became President in 1768, the college shifted focus from training ministers to the preparation of leaders for the new nation. Witherspoon created stringent academic standards and sought investment in the college.

For four months, Princeton’s Nassau Hall was the capital of the country as during the summer of 1783, the Continental Congress met there. The Graduate school at Princeton was formally established in 1900.
