Center for Information Technology Policy Will Host “E-Voting: Risk and Opportunity,” at 1:30 p.m. November 1, 2012

Princeton University’s Woodrow Wilson School’s Center for Information Technology Policy (CITP) is hosting an event with significant implications in the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy and its impact on the Presidential election. The seminar is “E-Voting: Risk and Opportunity,” a live, streaming symposium on the current status and future of voting technology. At 1:30 p.m. (Eastern) on November 1, 2012, electronic voting experts from across the United States will discuss Election Day. It will be an in depth examination into how we might construct a convenient, high technology voting system of the future that is secure. The participants will offer recommendations to policymakers about what steps we should be taking to implement such a system. The current U.S. voting system is a patchwork of locally executed technologies. As we saw in the last close Presidential election, 2000, it operates with varying degrees of reliability, and security. New voting laws in several states this year could force an increase in provisional ballots, which have the potential to decide the election in some states.
The panel will explore a wide range of voting issues. Some will urge better systems and standards. Others are advocating entirely new approaches like internet voting.

Different groups have advocated for improved systems, better standards, and new approaches like internet-based voting. Panelists will discuss these issues and more, with a keynote speech  by Professor Ron Rivest of MIT the inventor of several encryption algorithms that could prove useful in securely transmitting voter information. You can watch the seminar live at https://citp.princeton.edu, or view the recording after the event finishes. It will be a worthwhile endeavor for anybody concerned about one of our most basic rights in a democracy.
